AC/DC album downloaded 400,000 times despite no digital release

Published by admin under Music news

AC/DC’s forthcoming new album, ‘Black Ice’, leaked onto file sharing service BitTorrent on October 7 and has been downloaded over 400,000 times.

The album, set for official release on Monday (October 20), will not be available as a legal download.

According to Undercover the band’s label, Sony, released fake AC/DC songs online to hamper users attempting to download the album.

However, Torrentfreak claimed that there was no evidence of the fake tracks online.

AC/DC boycott Apple’s iTunes download service as well as other similar services, but still enjoy huge sales of their albums. In 2007 they sold 1.3 million albums in the USA.

AC/DC’s Angus Young has said that the band’s decision to refrain from releasing music digitally was motivated by a desire to ensure their fans enjoy their albums as wholes, not simply a few tracks at a time.

“We don’t make singles, we make albums,” he told the Telegraph. “We believe the songs on any of our albums belong together.”

Update: Judge Dismisses Battery Charges Against The Game, Rapper To Attend Anger Management Classes

Published by admin under Music news

A Los Angeles judge yesterday (September 30) dismissed criminal battery charges against The Game for attacking his cousin at a funeral earlier this year.

As reported earlier, Game’s cousin (Robert “Kirky” Kirkwood) filed a police report in July claiming that the Compton rapper punched him at his sister’s funeral.

Kirkwood claimed that Game had agreed to pay half of the bill for his sister’s funeral but stiffed him when it was time to pay up.

Kirkwood claimed that Game appeared unexpectedly at his sister’s funeral and when he approached Game about the funding for the funeral outside the church, the rapper would punch him in the face.

According to TMZ, The Game was ordered Tuesday  to attend 36 anger-management meetings by February 2009 or face time behind bars.

Barack Obama to release official campaign soundtrack

Published by admin under Music news

After months of YouTube tributes and unofficial music videos, Barack Obama is finally entering the record industry. The US Democratic presidential nominee is to release an official campaign soundtrack, with contributions by Stevie Wonder, Kanye West and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine.

Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement will be released in conjunction with Hidden Beach Recordings, who negotiated rights with the artists. It will be sold as a campaign fundraiser until the November 4 election, following which it will strictly be a fundraiser for, er, Hidden Beach Recordings.

“We had conversations quite some time ago about how to harness what was happening really organically and naturally with so many artists,” Hidden Beach’s Steve McKeever told Associated Press. “The whole concept [was] how do we translate that to inspire and invigorate and also give people a keepsake that they can own, while at the same time providing some important capital needed for this campaign.”

Although musicians like Will.I.Am, Dave Stewart and Ludacris have already created star-studded pro-Obama tracks, none of these were requested – or officially sanctioned – releases. Luda, Dave and the Black Eyed Pea have been left off Yes We Can, but the compilation does include tracks by John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, John Legend, and a new song by Malik Yusef featuring both Kanye West and Adam Levine.

The ode to change and new tomorrows also includes at least one song from 38 years ago – Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours.

Musicians haven’t flocked quite so enthusiastically to John McCain’s Republican campaign, prompting McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds to quip, “It’s ironic that on a day when the economy is in turmoil, Barack Obama fails to release an economic plan, but instead chooses a celebrity rock album.”

For his part, McKeever thinks that Democrats and Republicans alike can enjoy Yes We Can. “I don’t think that there’s anything on it that’s a real partisan message,” he said. “The messages I think are quite universal.”

Somehow we don’t think Yes We Can will be one of John McCain’s Desert Island Discs.

KAISER CHIEFS

Published by admin under Music news

“Off With Their Heads” (Universal/Motown): B-

Last year, these indie rockers from Leeds, England, had the UK’s best-selling LP with “Yours Truly, Angry Mob.” Such success allowed frontman Ricky Wilson and crew to recruit 2008 producer of the year Mark Ronson to helm their third album. Is this as good as their terrific first two CDs? Nah nah nah nah nah; but this is an admirably ambitious misstep. The band’s Arctic Monkeys/retro Britpop sound has been replaced by a jittery XTC/Futureheads fusion, never more obvious than in the psychedelic “Tomato in the Rain” and “Half the Truth” (featuring an annoying rap vocal by Sway). Download: “Good Days Bad Days.”

Savage Garden an official Hit

Published by admin under Music news

Savage Garden’s hit song “Truly Madly Deeply” has come in at No. 30 on Billboard’s Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs. Billboard recently compiled the Hot 100 list from the charts first 50 years, August 1958 through July 2008.

Savage Garden hit Billboard’s Hot 100 pinnacle with “Truly Madly Deeply” in 1998 and also again in 2000 with “I Knew I Loved You.” Both ballads were not only Adult Contemporary No. 1s, but they were also the top songs of the year at the format on Billboard’s year-end rankings for 1998 and 2000, respectively. “Truly Madly Deeply “ is also the ONLY one-sided single to spend a whole year in the Top 30 of the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

Savage Garden are considered to be one of the most successful duo’s in pop music history. They have sold over 25 million albums and 15 million singles around the world and they also hold the record for winning the most ARIA awards in the one year (that would be 10 awards in 1997!)

When Savage Garden parted ways in 2001, Darren Hayes went on to not only become a successful solo artist but also the owner of his own record label, Powdered Sugar.  He has just recently released The Time Machine concert on DVD which debuted at #No. 1 in the UK.

Darren is currently at home in Australia working as a mentor with the finalists of Australian Idol.  He will appear on the show as a guest judge this Sunday September 28.

Pop review: Dragonforce

Published by admin under Music news

London-spawned power-metallers DragonForce might just be having the most fun in rock. Not only is their stage set an adventure playground of ramps, risers and mini trampolines, but their latest album, Ultra Beatdown, is a Top 20 hit in the UK and US charts.

Formed in 1999 around the combative axe skills of Herman Li and Sam Totman, the six-piece owe their success to the inclusion of their finger-shredding Through the Fire and Flames on video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. No longer underground technicians of extreme-speed melodic metal, but mainstream stars, DragonForce look justifiably pleased with themselves.

Singer ZP Theart charms and cajoles the crowd to get involved. They rise to his challenge (one fan bares her breasts), but the frenzied pace of each fantasy-inspired frolic obliterates Theart’s Ronnie James Dio-ish roar during Heroes of Our Time and Operation Ground and Pound. Vadim Pruzhanov’s game-inspired synth sounds only muddle the murky sound further.

Nothing, however, can obscure the bombastic silliness or dizzying intensity of the songs and the band’s joy in playing them. Pruzhanov braves the trampolines, while the guitarists duel good-naturedly to the vengeful fury and moody introspection of Reasons to Live. Theart throws trays of beer over the mosh pit and swigs neat Jack Daniels along with bassist Frédéric Leclercq. Leclercq turns guitarist, teaming up with Pruzhanov for an entertaining instrumental interlude, but it is Totman and Li’s dizzying theatrics, which culminate in the adrenaline rush of Through the Fire and Flames, that makes DragonForce such an exciting, irony-free pleasure. As a celebration of DragonForce’s achievements, fans couldn’t ask for much more.
