Named in honor of an Andalucian anarchist chemic group, Mano Negra emerged from the like Parisian artists’ mount which as well gave rise to the like-minded Les Negresses Vertes, lottery touch influence from the strong-armer ethos of the Clash and the battalion of sounds and rhythms autochthonous to the globular medicine residential district. Formed in 1986 from the remnants of the neo-rockabilly unit the Hot Pants, Mano Negra fundamentally consisted of vocalizer Manu Chao, his trumpeter blood brother Tonio and drummer full cousin Santiago Casiriego, Spanish natives wHO coalesced stone, rap, flamenco and rai to create a reckless brew they dubbed “Patchanka,” a name derived from a Spanish dislogistic for dancehall music. Mano Negra’s debut LP, besides highborn Patchanka, appeared in 1988, marking the French indie hit “Mala Vida.”

The record’s success lED to a compact with Virgin, which in 1989 issued the group’s soph endeavor Puta’s Fever (Dominican slang for a sexually-transmitted disease caught from a sporting lady), increasing the band’s visibility afield as well as establishing them as France’s to the highest degree popular alternative act. While 1991’s B. B. King of Bongo attempted to broaden their Anglo fanbase via the comprehension of several English-language tracks, merely their focus quickly turned to South America when in 1992 they embarked on the “Payload Tour,” traveling to a series of port cities to perform on a stagecoach built into their ship’s carry. Mano Negra returned the next twelvemonth, this time journeying by rail from Colombia’s Caribbean coast to the capital metropolis of Bogotá, gift free concerts at stations of the Cross en route. Latin influences henpecked 1994’s Casa Babylon, which proven to be the group’s last disk; Manu Chao later resurfaced in Radio Bemba, and released his first solo album (Clandestino) in 1998.
